NATIONAL DIPLOMA: MEDICAL SECRETARY (N4 – N6)

What is the program about?

This program is a gateway into the interesting world of medicine, laboratories, and hospitals.  It’s an excellent career prospect for organized professional people who like the prospect of a career in the medical profession, without having to work with blood / broken bones, or sick & injured people.

How do I become a medical secretary?

  1. Enroll at Kunokhanya Training Academy
  2. Complete your studies (up to N6)
  3. Work in a secretarial/admin position, preferably in the medical field (18 months / 2000 hours)
  4. If you have prior experience, these hours may count.
  5. Submit proof of your work experience in order to receive your Diploma

What are the minimum admission requirements?

  • NSC / N3 / Grade 12

When can I register?

  • There are two intakes per year: January and June.
  • Registration closes on the last day of intake month

When do I write examinations?

  • Examinations are conducted in June and November every year
  • Students write examinations set by the National Department of Education and receive a Department of Education Certificate. To qualify for a National Diploma, students need to obtain and complete 18 months of relevant practical experience. The National Diploma can be used as an entry to university degrees.

What jobs do I do as a medical secretary?

The medical secretary works closely with doctors, specialists or other medical professionals, assisting with typing and filing memos, submitting samples for lab tests, x-rays, filing and faxing of prescriptions, and confidential patient information.  They also play a role in managing the appointment book for patients, theatre bookings, and may also deal with debtors, creditors, and medical aid companies.

  A Day in a Medical Secretary's Life:

On a typical day a medical secretary's tasks might include:

  • answering telephones
  • scheduling appointments
  • routing phone calls to appropriate staff
  • taking messages
  • typing correspondence
  • preparing financial reports
  • transcribing written information
  • greeting patients
  • helping patients complete intake forms
  • completing insurance forms
  • receiving laboratory results and routing them to appropriate staff
  • maintaining medical files
  • communicating with insurance companies
  • communicating with the offices of other healthcare providers
  • maintaining inventory of forms and supplies
  • preparing bills
  • coordinating staff members' schedules
  • receiving payment from patients

 

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORK LEVEL 4

What is the title of the program?
Community Health Work 4, SAQA ID No  64697

Qualification Type: Further Education and Training Certificate

Duration of study: At least 12 months. It has Theory, Practical, and Work Place Training components.

What is the purpose of the program?
To develop Ancillary Health Care practitioners who will practice the roles of health promoters, health provider and health networker within a community development context.

The individuals will be able to:

  • Assist in planning and implementing promotion programs for Health Care within communities.
  • Assist in the facilitation and implementation of primary health care projects within the community.
  • Achieve ancillary health care objectives within own community/work context.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Community Health Work Level 3/Grade11 with passes in Mathematical literacy and English
  • Possession of Grade 12 is an advantage
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3 is strongly recommended

What can I do after obtaining this qualification?
Find employment as a:

  • Facilitator/administrator for community health activities
  • Community Health Care worker - Assisting in planning advocacy campaigns to support primary health care initiatives and
    Assisting in facilitating and implementing primary health care projects within the community.
  • Enroll for higher-level qualifications such as Medical secretary NQF level 5, Nursing NQF level 5 & Pharmaceutical Sales Representation NQF Level 5.

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORK LEVEL 2

Qualification Type: National Certificate

Duration of study: At least 12 months. It has Theory, Practical and Work Place Training components.

What is the purpose of the program?
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to perform ancillary health care at a higher level than Ancillary Health Care Level 1. Qualifying learners will integrate a range of basic awareness & competencies to perform health care activities, create awareness on critical health care issues, perform the roles of health promoters, assist the health networker, manage & implement fundamental administrative, physical & life skills to ensure ongoing well-being and work productivity.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Grade 9 and above or Abet NQF level 4
  • Ancillary Health Care

What can I do after obtaining this qualification?

Find employment as a:

  • Care Giver/Care Worker
  • Community Health Worker-health promoter, health networker
  • Enroll to study Community Health Work Level 3

ANCILLARY HEALTH CARE LEVEL 1

What is the title of the program?
GETC: Ancillary Health Care, SAQA ID 49606

Qualification Type: National Certificate

Duration of study: At least 12 months. It has Theory, Practical and Work Place Training components.

What is the purpose of the program?
To equip learners with the competence required to perform community health functions under the supervision of a professional health care worker or nurse. Qualified learners in this field will provide a service that will assist communities to better manage their own health and wellness.

 What are the entry requirements?

  1. At least grade 8 or equivalent certificate or an ABET Level 3 qualification.
  2. Learners must also have the following skills: reading, writing, and speaking in English, ability to undertake independent learning.
  3. Learners who have successfully completed a care worker program.

What can I do after obtaining this qualification?

  • Find employment as a Care Giver/Care Worker.
  • Enroll to study the national certificate in Ancillary Health Care at Levels 2(Community Health Work Level 2)
