What is the title of the programme?
Community Health Work 4, SAQA ID No  64697

Qualification Type: Further Education and Training Certificate

Duration of study: At least 12 months. It has Theory, Practical and Work Place Training components.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Community Health Work Level 3/Grade11 with passes in Mathematical literacy and English
  • Possession of Grade 12 is an advantage
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3 is strongly recommended

What is the purpose of the programme?
To develop Ancillary Health Care practitioners who will practise the roles of health promoter, health provider and health networker within a community development context.

The individuals will be able to:

  • Assist in planning and implementing promotion programmes for Health Care within communities.
  • Assist in the facilitation and implementation of primary health care projects within the community.
  • Achieve ancillary health care objectives within own community/work context.

Duties of a community health worker?

  1. Health Promotion and Education at household level.
  2. Refer to relevant Departments those needing to.
  3. Identify areas of potential danger or hazard ad report to relevant departments.
  4. Initiate and support community based development projects
  5. Liaison between community and Department of Health
  6. Advocacy and Marketing for Department of Health at community level.
  7. Community mobilization against diseases and ill health through awareness campaigns, health promotional material, word of mouth, role modelling, etc.
  8. Counselling, support, passionate caring, stress relief etc.
  9. DOTS – directly supervised treatment support
  10. Home Based Care
  11. Screening of Health related cards for compliance or default
  12. Assesses health status of all family members and give advises.
  13. Weighs infants and babies and record in the Road to Health Card.
  14. Provide PMTCT support at household level.

What can I do after obtaining this qualification?
Find employment as a:

  • Facilitator/administrator for community health activities
  • Community Health Care worker - Assisting in planning advocacy campaigns to support primary health care initiatives and
    Assisting in facilitating and implementing primary health care projects within the community.
  • Enroll for higher level qualifications such as Medical secretary NQF level 5, Nursing NQF level 5 & Pharmaceutical Sales Representation NQF Level 5.
